Virus Protection

What is a Computer Virus?

A computer virus is a program that can modify programs and data files. It is designed to replicate and infect as many files as possible. Viruses can be extremely destructive to your data and hardware. A virus is also known as malware, malicious software. Other examples of malware are worms and Trojans.

Worms copy themselves from system to system rather than infiltrating files. Email worms send copies of themselves to users listed on the infected machine's address book.

Trojans are associated with remote access programs that perform illegal operations such as stealing passwords or allowing compromised machines to be used for targeted denial of service attacks. A denial of service (DoS) attack involves flooding a target system with so much data, traffic or commands that it cannot perform its core functions.

How do I protect my system from a virus?

  1. Install anti-virus software and keep it updated. It is very important that you check for new virus definition updates on a consistent basis. Many anti-virus software packages do this automatically.
  2. Make sure all necessary security patches are installed. Windows vulnerabilities are constantly being discovered. Microsoft routinely releases approximately 100 security patches per year. Visit www.windowsupdate.com to download critical patches for your system. Not applying these patches leaves your system open for an attack by a worm.
  3. Use a firewall. No Internet connection is truly safe without one. Get a firewall that monitors both inbound and outbound connection attempts.
  4. Secure your email. Be wary of email attachments. An executable type attachment should not be opened unless it was specifically requested or expected. An email worm is sent to addresses found on an infected user's machine. This user may be someone you know and may be unaware the viral email was sent from their machine. The best course of action is to ask the person if they intended to send you the attachment.
  5. Secure your browser. If using Internet Explorer, take advantage of the security zones settings to ensure optimum browsing safety.
